Mark 14:12-31;

14:12: On the first day of unleavened bread, when they sacrificed the Passover, his disciples asked him, "Where do you want us to go and make ready that you may eat the Passover?"

14:13: He sent two of his disciples, and said to them, "Go into the city, and there you will meet a man carrying a pitcher of water. Follow him,

14:14: and wherever he enters in, tell the master of the house, 'The Teacher says, "Where is the guest room, where I may eat the Passover with my disciples?"'

14:15: He will himself show you a large upper room furnished and ready. Make ready for us there."

14:16: His disciples went out, and came into the city, and found things as he had said to them, and they prepared the Passover.

14:17: When it was evening he came with the twelve.

14:18: As they sat and were eating, Jesus said, "Most assuredly I tell you, one of you will betray me -- he who eats with me."

14:19: They began to be sorrowful, and to ask him one by one, "Surely not I?" And another said, "Surely not I?"

14:20: He answered them, "It is one of the twelve, he who dips with me in the dish.

14:21: For the Son of Man goes, even as it is written about him, but woe to that man by whom the Son of Man is betrayed! It would be better for that man if he had not been born."

22:28: But you are those who have continued with me in my trials.

22:29: I confer on you a kingdom, even as my Father conferred on me,

22:30: that you may eat and drink at my table in my kingdom. You will sit on thrones, judging the twelve tribes of Israel."

22:31: The Lord said, "Simon, Simon, behold, Satan asked to have you, that he might sift you as wheat,

22:32: but I prayed for you, that your faith wouldn't fail. You, when once you have turned again, establish your brothers{The word for "brothers" here may be also correctly translated "brothers and sisters" or "siblings."}."

22:33: He said to him, "Lord, I am ready to go with you both to prison and to death!"

22:34: He said, "I tell you, Peter, the rooster will by no means crow today until you deny that you know me three times."

22:35: He said to them, "When I sent you out without purse, and wallet, and shoes, did you lack anything?" They said, "Nothing."

22:36: Then he said to them, "But now, whoever has a purse, let him take it, and likewise a wallet. Whoever has none, let him sell his cloak, and buy a sword.

22:37: For I tell you that this which is written must still be fulfilled in me: 'He was counted with the lawless.' For that which concerns me has an end."

22:38: They said, "Lord, behold, here are two swords." He said to them, "That is enough."

John 13.

13:1: Now before the feast of the Passover, Jesus knowing that his time had come that he would depart from this world to the Father, having loved his own who were in the world, he loved them to the end.

13:2: After supper, the devil having already put into the heart of Judas Iscariot, Simon's son, to betray him,

13:3: Jesus, knowing that the Father had given all things into his hands, and that he came forth from God, and was going to God,

13:4: arose from supper, and laid aside his outer garments. He took a towel, and wrapped a towel around his waist.

13:5: Then he poured water into the basin, and began to wash the disciples' feet, and to wipe them with the towel that was wrapped around him.

13:6: Then he came to Simon Peter. He said to him, "Lord, do you wash my feet?"

13:7: Jesus answered him, "You don't know what I am doing now, but you will understand later."

13:8: Peter said to him, "You will never wash my feet!" Jesus answered him, "If I don't wash you, you have no part with me."

13:9: Simon Peter said to him, "Lord, not my feet only, but also my hands and my head!"

13:10: Jesus said to him, "Someone who has bathed only needs to have his feet washed, but is completely clean. You are clean, but not all of you."

13:11: For he knew him who would betray him, therefore he said, "You are not all clean."

13:12: So when he had washed their feet, put his outer garment back on, and sat down again, he said to them, "Do you know what I have done to you?

13:13: You call me, 'Teacher' and 'Lord.' You say so correctly, for so I am.

13:14: If I then, the Lord and the Teacher, have washed your feet, you also ought to wash one another's feet.

13:15: For I have given you an example, that you also should do as I have done to you.

13:16: Most assuredly I tell you, a servant is not greater than his lord, neither one who is sent greater than he who sent him.

13:17: If you know these things, blessed are you if you do them.

13:18: I don't speak concerning all of you. I know whom I have chosen. But that the Scripture may be fulfilled, 'He who eats bread with me has lifted up his heel against me.'

13:19: From now on, I tell you before it happens, that when it happens, you may believe that I AM.

13:20: Most assuredly I tell you, he who receives whomever I send, receives me; and he who receives me, receives him who sent me."

13:21: When Jesus had said this, he was troubled in spirit, and testified, "Most assuredly I tell you that one of you will betray me."

13:22: The disciples looked at one another, perplexed about whom he spoke.

13:23: One of his disciples, whom Jesus loved, was at the table, leaning against Jesus' breast.

13:24: Simon Peter therefore beckoned to him, and said to him, "Tell us who it is of whom he speaks."

13:25: He, leaning back, as he was, on Jesus' breast, asked him, "Lord, who is it?"

13:26: Jesus therefore answered, "It is he to whom I will give this piece of bread when I have dipped it." So when he had dipped the piece of bread, he gave it to Judas, the son of Simon Iscariot.

13:27: After the piece of bread, then Satan entered into him. Then Jesus said to him, "What you do, do quickly."

13:28: Now no man at the table knew why he said this to him.

13:29: For some thought, because Judas had the money box, that Jesus said to him, "Buy what things we need for the feast," or that he should give something to the poor.

13:30: Therefore, having received that morsel, he went out immediately. It was night.

13:31: When he had gone out, Jesus said, "Now the Son of Man has been glorified, and God has been glorified in him.

13:32: If God has been glorified in him, God will also glorify him in himself, and he will glorify him immediately.

13:33: Little children, I will be with you a little while longer. You will seek me, and as I said to the Jews, 'Where I am going, you can't come,' so now I tell you.

13:34: A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another, just like I have loved you; that you also love one another.

13:35: By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another."

13:36: Simon Peter said to him, "Lord, where are you going?" Jesus answered, "Where I am going, you can't follow now, but you will follow afterwards."

13:37: Peter said to him, "Lord, why can't I follow you now? I will lay down my life for you."

13:38: Jesus answered him, "Will you lay down your life for me? Most assuredly I tell you, the rooster won't crow until you have denied me three times.

COMMUNION VERSES:

Jesus took a piece of bread and blessed it and broke it, and said, "Take eat; this is my body." Likewise He took the cup, and after giving thanks, He asked the disciples to partake of it (Matthew 26:26-28). Luke's account says all this happened "after supper" (Luke 22:20). The word "communion" itself implies that a union in heart and belief and life must exist among those who engage together in the observance. Each believer is admonished to examine his life carefully before participating (I Corinthians 11:28).

It was never called "The Lord's Supper" anywhere in the Scriptures.

The Meaning of the Symbol: The piece of broken bread and the sip of the fruit of the vine are observed is remembrance of Christ's broken bruised body and of His shed blood (1 Corinthians 1 1 :24-2 5). When we partake of the Communion elements we are remembering Calvary; we are thinking of how our Lord was nailed to the Cross; we are recognizing that He was wounded for our transgressions and that the wrath of God which was poured out on Him, should have been heaped upon us! We are saying with the hymn writer, "My hope is built on nothing less than Jesus' blood and righteousness."

The service of feet washing, the supper, and the communion were all instituted by the same Lord, at the same time, and with the same authority. Jesus said of them, "If ye know these things (plural because there are three parts), happy are ye if ye do them." Is it not a serious thing to separate what God has put together?

Celebrating Communion

The fellowship of the bread and cup should be conducted in a quiet and unhurried atmosphere. Sometimes it is best to have a special service devoted principally or exclusively to the observance of the Lord's Supper. It is not a good idea to add this on to a service that is already complete in itself.

When the communion service is to be a part of a regular service of worship, the following order is suggested:

The congregation sings a hymn related to the Cross or to Christ's death. During this singing the pastor and the elders or deacons take their places at the communion table and remove the coverings from the elements on the table.

Scripture is read: 1 Corinthians 11:23-26 (may also include verses 27-32).

11:23: For I received from the Lord that which also I delivered to you, that the Lord Jesus on the night in which he was betrayed took bread.

11:24: When he had given thanks, he broke it, and said, "Take, eat. This is my body, which is broken for you. Do this in memory of me."

11:25: In the same way he also took the cup, after supper, saying, "This cup is the new covenant in my blood. Do this, as often as you drink, in memory of me."

11:26: For as often as you eat this bread and drink this cup, you proclaim the Lord's death until he comes.

11:27: Therefore whoever eats this bread or drinks the Lord's cup in a manner unworthy of the Lord will be guilty of the body and the blood of the Lord.

11:28: But let a man examine himself, and so let him eat of the bread, and drink of the cup.

11:29: For he who eats and drinks in an unworthy manner eats and drinks judgment to himself, if he doesn't discern the Lord's body.

11:30: For this cause many among you are weak and sickly, and not a few sleep.

11:31: For if we discerned ourselves, we wouldn't be judged.

11:32: But when we are judged, we are punished by the Lord, that we may not be condemned with the world.

11:1: Be imitators of me, even as I also am of Christ.

11:2: Now I praise you, brothers, that you remember me in all things, and hold firm the traditions, even as I delivered them to you.

11:3: But I would have you know that the head of every man is Christ, and the head of the woman is the man, and the head of Christ is God.

11:4: Every man praying or prophesying, having his head covered, dishonors his head.

11:5: But every woman praying or prophesying with her head unveiled dishonors her head. For it is one and the same thing as if she were shaved.

11:6: For if a woman is not covered, let her also be shorn. But if it is shameful for a woman to be shorn or shaved, let her be covered.

11:7: For a man indeed ought not to have his head covered, because he is the image and glory of God, but the woman is the glory of the man.

11:8: For man is not from woman, but woman from man;

11:9: for neither was man created for the woman, but woman for the man.

11:10: For this cause the woman ought to have authority on her head, because of the angels.

11:11: Nevertheless, neither is the woman independent of the man, nor the man independent of the woman, in the Lord.

11:12: For as woman came from man, so a man also comes through a woman; but all things are from God.

11:13: Judge for yourselves. Is it appropriate that a woman pray to God unveiled?

11:14: Doesn't even nature itself teach you that if a man has long hair, it is a dishonor to him?

11:15: But if a woman has long hair, it is a glory to her, for her hair is given to her for a covering.

11:16: But if any man seems to be contentious, we have no such custom, neither do God's assemblies.

11:17: But in giving you this command, I don't praise you, that you come together not for the better but for the worse.

11:18: For first of all, when you come together in the assembly, I hear that divisions exist among you, and I partly believe it.

11:19: For there also must be factions among you, that those who are approved may be revealed among you.

11:20: When therefore you assemble yourselves together, it is not possible to eat the Lord's supper.

11:21: For in your eating each one takes his own supper before others. One is hungry, and another is drunken.

11:22: What, don't you have houses to eat and to drink in? Or do you despise God's assembly, and put them to shame who don't have? What shall I tell you? Shall I praise you? In this I don't praise you.
